「Progress in Assistive Robot Research and Launching a Physical AI Community」

Assistive robots are robots that perform actions directly contributing to improvements in people's quality of life. Introducing robots into homes and offices is being pursued worldwide as a way to address the decline in the working-age population associated with low birthrates and aging societies. Many tasks handled by such robots involve manipulating objects, such as searching for and tidying up items. To perform these tasks appropriately, robots must understand environments and object layouts, flexibly interpret language instructions, and plan actions. In this talk, the speaker first introduces his previous research. For robots to adapt to diverse living environments, it is key to combine environment-specific knowledge learned from observations with general knowledge from human common sense and LLMs. By inferring object placement as probability distributions from these two types of knowledge and integrating them, he has realized object search, interpretation of language instructions including referring expressions, and cooperative search by multiple robots. Finally, he introduces the Physical AI community (RPATH) launched at Ritsumeikan University.
